Soon, robotic octopus to solve the mysteries of seas

Scientists are developing a robotic octopus that will be able to search the
seabed with the same extraordinary dexterity as the real eight-legged
cephalopod.

With
no solid skeleton, the robot would be the world's first entirely soft robot, say
researchers.

The
trouble with today's remote-controlled subs, says researcher Cecilia Laschi of
the Italian Institute of Technology in Genoa, is that their large hulls and
clunky robot arms cannot reach into the nooks and crannies of coral reefs or the
rock formations on ocean floors.

This
implies they are unable to photograph objects in these places or pick up samples
for analysis. And that's a major minus point for oceanographers hunting for
signs of climate change in the oceans and on coral reefs.

Since
an octopus's tentacles can bend in all directions and quickly thin and elongate
to almost twice their length, they can reach, grasp and manipulate objects in
tiny spaces with dexterity.

"So
we are replicating the muscular structure of an octopus by making a robot with
no rigid structure - and that is completely new to robotics," New Scientist
quoted Laschi, as saying.

Laschi
and colleagues in the UK, Switzerland, Turkey, Greece and Israel are testing
artificial muscle technologies that will more accurately mimic
tentacles.

The
team plans to mimic the longitudinal muscles with soft silicone rubber
interspersed with a type of electroactive polymer (EAP) called a dielectric
elastomer. Apply an electric field to this material and it squeezes the
silicone, making it shorter.

The
study has been published in Biomimetics and Bioinspiration.

'People's Car' Nano to be launched tomorrow - India

NEW DELHI: History will be created in Mumbai on Monday when Tata Motors launches the world's least expensive car, Nano -- a car that can

redefine personal transportation in modern India.

Described as "People's Car" by Tata Group Chairman Ratan Tata, Nano's commercial launch will mark a milestone in a journey, which was replete with controversies, hurdles and criticism from competitors.

As far as customers are concerned, they can expect to own a car coming at a price between Rs 1.20 lakh and Rs 1.30 lakh, depending on the version of Nano, although bookings will start only in April second week.

According to dealer sources, if the company keeps the ex-factory price at Rs 1 lakh, as promised by Tata, then the base model could easily have an on-road price of Rs 1.20 lakh after adding taxes such as excise duty, education cess and road tax, along with transportation cost, local taxes, insurance and registration fees and a lifetime parking fees (wherever applicable).

Last month, Tata Motors had appointed public sector lender State Bank of India as the sole booking agent for the world's least expensive car from the stable of Tatas. The booking amount is reportedly fixed at Rs 70,000.

Ever since the idea of making a car costing only Rs 1 lakh for Indian passengers was conceived way back in 2003 by Ratan Tata, his dream had to face challenges -- both technical and political.

At a time when input costs were soaring, keeping cost of production of a comfortable mini car powered by a 623cc engine giving a competitive mileage, was a challenge big enough.

While Tatas were able to overcome it, the group was unable to beat political challenge from Trinamool Congress and had to shift manufacturing base from the original location at Singur in West Bengal to Sanand in Gujarat.

It delayed not only the original plans for the commercial launch of Nano by about five months, but also affected its availability.

Till the time the Sanand facility is ready by 2010, Nano will be produced from Tata Motors' factories at Pantnagar in Uttarakhand and Pune in Maharashtra in limited numbers.

After the launch in Mumbai, Nano would be displayed at the company's dealerships from the first week of April, while the bookings would start from the following week. The booking process and other details of the Rs one lakh car would be announced on the day of launch.

While critics had been sceptical about the car meeting safety and emission norms, Tata had said during the unveiling of Nano on January 10, 2008, in Auto Expo in Delhi that the car would meet Bharat Stage-III emission norms and could also meet the stringent Euro 4 norms. The car has also gone through a full frontal crash test as per standard norms, he said.

Besides, the European version of the car was unveiled in the first week of this month at the Geneva Motor Show. The company plans to roll out the car by 2011, complying with Euro V emission norms and some added features.

The Nano is eight per cent shorter than Maruti 800, the cheapest car on offer currently in India, on bumper to bumper length, but is 21 per cent more spacious, Tata had claimed in Auto Expo. The 623cc Nano comes with a 33 HP petrol engine, but a diesel variant would also be launched soon.

The Nano would come in three variants -- standard and two deluxe models with air conditioning.

[UPDATED] One of my favorite new major features of Google Earth 5 is the new Mars mode. This feature isn't obvious when you first load up Google Earth 5, but it is fantastic! After loading Google Earth you look for the little planet icon at the top center of the view. Click on it and you will see a menu. You now can switch between Earth, Sky, AND Mars.Once you select this, Google Earth transforms itself in a view of Mars instead of Earth. This is NOT just an image overlay on top of Earth! Its a complete simulation of the planet Mars just like Google Earth. You use the same controls, and there is even a set of very useful layers just like in Google Earth. Here's a screenshot:Zooming in is where the real excitement begins. Google shows satellite imagery just like with Google Earth of the martian surface. Not only that, but they have 3D terrain as well! Look at this shot of Valleris Maneris (the huge grand canyon of Mars):And, that's just the beginning. There are very high resolution satellite images from the HiRISE imaging system on the Mars Reconnaissance Observatory satellite. You'll see strips of HiRISE imagery overlayed in Google Mars. These images are just as high resolution as those you often find in Google Earth. Interesting Web Browsers You Have Never Heard Of

There are more browsers than you are aware of. Besides Firefox, Opera and Internet Explorer there is a number of promising alternatives which can improve your flexibility, increase your productivity and enrich your browsing experience.

In fact, there are over 100 existing (although not widely used) browser applications. Most of them make use of the rendering engines Trident (Internet Explorer), Gecko (Mozilla Firefox), WebCore (Safari) and Presto (Opera 7 and above). However, some of them offer large fields for experiments and exploration — e.g. 3D Engines, but also really useful browsers with advanced functionalities such as desktop-tools integration.

Recently we’ve selected over 20 Win/Mac/Linux-browsers, installed most of them, tested them, compared them and now present the results below. Let’s take a closer look at some rather unknown, forgotten, advanced or experimental browsers. What else do we have on the horizon? What should we use? And what might we be willing to use? Apparently, between Firefox, Opera and Internet Explorer there is enough room for creative and unusual approaches.

Please note that

we’ve tried to showcase only those browsers that use Gecko or WebCore layout engine, but we present some interesting Trident-based applications as well;
it wasn’t our intention to display all available browsers such as Swiftweasel and Midori. We’ve selected the ones we’ve found most useful and promising.

This is Swiftweasel, an optimized build of the Mozilla Firefox web browser for Linux.

Portable Versions

Although we’ve recently seen a tremendous breakthrough of interactive web-applications, some tools such as file management or web browser are still left over to desktop-software. In order to actually use these applications, you need to install them on every PC you’re working on. Right?

Not really. In fact, there are hundreds of portable applications you can use to carry your favorite programs along with all of your bookmarks, settings and email. You can use them on any Windows computer. All without leaving any personal data behind. Being open-source, portable applications provide a truly open platform that works with any hardware (USB flash drive, iPod, portable hard drive, etc).

A portable version of Mozilla Firefox has the full functionality of Firefox bundled in a tiny encapsulated package.

The main advantage of portable versions is the simple fact that they are usually much faster, can be used without installation and require less memory. So, for instance, the portable version of Firefox uses 35% less memory. And you can test web-sites on some external machines immediately, without installing all the necessary browsers first.

Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition
Portable Edition is the Firefox bundled with a PortableApps.com Launcher as a portable app, so you can take your bookmarks, extensions and saved passwords with you.
Opera Portable Personal
You can manage multiple profiles at once. The profile file will contain all the settings you made while running. So, your settings, history, passwords etc. are packed into a single file, then they are overwritten and deleted on the host machine (so you leave no trace). When you run Opera Portable on another machine, your settings will be applied again.
Internet Explorer 7 Standalone
You can find a truly portable version of IE 7 in Google as well.

Flock (Win/Mac/Linux)

Flock is a social web browser based upon Firefox, with its own user interface and a number of unique “social” features. Instead of locally stored bookmarks Flockr uses public bookmarks, letting users add bookmarks to del.ico.us “on the fly”. The browser integrates Flickr, Twitter, Facebook, Technorati and further services such as an RSS feed-reader.

Flock points users’ attention to available RSS-Feeds.

What makes Flock unique is its ability to improve the productivity of bloggers. E.g. you can publish your blog posts directly from your browser-window — a WYSIWYG-editor is preinstalled by default. You can also use a Web-Clipboard, Photo Uploader, a Mediabar for Flickr-Fotos etc. Flock was released in October 2005, the first stable version was available two years later. Flock uses Yahoo as a default search engine.

The Flock Blog-Editor supports WordPress, TypePad, Blogger, LiveJournal and further services.

Safari (Mac / Win)

Safari belongs to Mac OS X just as Internet Explorer belongs to Windows. In both cases user interface is designed consistently with the common design used in the operating system. Since the mid 2007 Safari, with its elegant aqua design and and classic Mac user interface, is also available for Windows.

That’s no big news for Apple users, but quite interesting for Windows users who can now experience a quite new kind of text rendering. Safari is 2x faster than Internet Explorer. First beta-versions of Safari had a number of critical bugs, but the latest version is quite sophisticated and more or less stable. However, it doesn’t change the fact that Safari looks quite alien on Windows. Safari has solid and standards-compliant support for CSS, including a partial support of CSS3.

Shiira (Mac)

Shiira is a web browser based on Web Kit and written in Cocoa. The browser offers private browsing options so that history and cookies are not recorded when activated. The browser is of comparable stability and speed to Safari, making it among the fastest and most functional browsers for users of Mac OS X. One of the main advantages: elegant, breathtaking design and user interface.

The goal of the Shiira Project is to create a browser that is better and more useful than Safari. All source code used in this software is licensed under BSD and is publicly available.

Camino (Mac)

Camino’s main aim is to integrate as well as possible with the Mac OS. It uses the Aqua user interface and integrates a number of Mac OS X services. E.g. you can use Keychain for password management and Bonjour for scanning available bookmarks across your local network.

You can migrate your Firefox data and extend Camino in similar ways, using differences in keyboard shortcuts described on the site. Camino uses the Gecko rendering engine, what is not typical for Mac OS applications. Camino also offers the feed detection, spell-checking, session saving and more. “Single window mode” tames sites that insist on opening new windows by forcing their new windows to open in tabs, keeping window clutter to a minimum. Open Source.

GreenBrowser (Windows)

Not that this browser is actually green, but it’s a fresh, light and quite promising application with many useful tools you won’t find in your favourite web browsers. For instance, you can add the shortcuts of frequently used software applications in an external toolbar. Afterwards you can also set the option “Auto Start with GreenBrowser” or “Auto Close with GreenBrowser” to handle multiple applications at a time.

Besides, the browser also shows the state of the page; you can observe whether a file is downloaded, read or not, locked, protected, saved or bookmarked.

Among available options you’ll also find an ad filter, mouse gestures recognition, auto fill form, auto scroll, auto refresh, auto save, auto hide, quick key, skins and other features. Multiple languages are available. Unfortunately, the browser uses Trident as a rendering engine. 1.3 Mb.

Slim Browser (Windows)

Slim Browser is a tabbed multiple-site web browser that uses the Microsoft Trident rendering engine. That means that you can rescale tabs and group them within your browser as standalone windows. Slim Browser incorporates many useful features such as skinned window frame, hidden sites, built-in commands and scripting, RSS feed reader, blacklist / whitelist filtering and URL Alias.

Tabs can be saved in groups, which can then be opened at any time from the groups menu. You can also open only sites from that group, or have SlimBrowser open a group on startup. If the browser crashes, the opened tabs will be restored automatically.

Auto login enables you to to create an instant shortcut to a website you would normally need to type a username and password for - Slim Browser does it automatically.

K-Meleon (Windows)

K-Meleon is an extremely fast, customizable, lightweight web browser for Windows which is based on the Gecko layout engine. K-Meleon is free, open source software released under the GNU General Public License.

K-Meleon, as the title suggests, offers some middle thing between Firefox and Internet Explorer. From the technical point of view K-Meleon uses the Mozilla Gecko layout engine which stands for a modern, standard-conform site rendering. Optically K-Meleon resembles Internet Explorer. With the only difference that it has less features and functions. Thus the browser consumes less memory and loads pages faster.

There is no reason to change from Firefox to K-Meleon, as there are minimal differences between both of them. Sleipnir (Windows)

Sleipnir is a Japanese tabbed web browser almost nobody (except Japanese users) actually have ever heard about. However, the browser is quite old; it also has an English version and requires Windows. The main idea behind Sleipnir is the integration of both Firefox and Internet Explorer by using both rendering engines (Gecko and Trident) in one application. The user can select between both engines via icons in the status bar. This is useful for web-developers, because you can detect critical rendering issues immediately using multiple tabs.

There are few plugins and skins; however some functionalities such as zoom or tab-preview (thumbnails) work only with one of the rendering engines (IE). The tabs can be placed against each other and can be ordered as a cascade. If you’ve got used to your old browser, you’ll miss some functionality in Sleipnir. You can also use a portable version for USB.

By the way, Sleipnir is is Odin’s magical eight-legged steed in Norse mythology.

SpaceTime (Windows)

SpaceTime offers a 3D Tabbed Browsing. You can see more than one page at a time in unlimited space. You can also move pages around, as well as flip and turn them.

uBrowser (Windows)

Web pages as a cube. uBrowser is an open source test mule that renders interactive web pages onto geometry using OpenGL and an embedded instance of Gecko.

The Browse3D web browser is supposed to offer users a visual advantage making finding and using web information more productive. 3B is another 3D browser. Although it looks interesting, it’s also very commercial. To use the browser you need to register on the site. You can use a chat as well.

Bitty (all)

Bitty is a browser within a browser. Although it definitely won’t compete with Firefox or Safari, it might be quite useful in some situation. The browser can be integrated into web-pages and can display external web-sites or RSS-feeds. A tiny small navigation is available as well as the Google search. Unfortunately, Bitty has some ads as well.

Netscape / SeaMonkey

Yes, Netscape, a descendant of Netscape Navigator, is actually still alive. However, since Netscape has lost its market share over the last decade, now it can be seen as a radical alternative to everything else browser market has to offer. What is interesting is that Netscape today is actually Firefox with a new skin. Navigator 9 is available for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.

Navigator is also included into SeaMonkey, a free, open source, and cross-platform Internet suite that is the continuation of the former Mozilla Application Suite. SeaMonkey has inherited the all-in-one concept of the original Netscape Communicator and continues that product line based on the cross-platform architecture provided by the Mozilla project. It also has a Mail & Newsgroups client program, and an HTML editor, or Composer program. The SeaMonkey is available for Microsoft Windows, Linux and Mac OS X.

The widescreen Sidekick LX has cast a long, ominous shadow over the release of the Sidekick Slide, threatening to take a whole lot of steam over the baby Hiptop's launch -- Motorola's first -- come November 7. Guess what, though? Every time we put our hands on the Slide, we're liking it more and more. The thing feels rock solid, the slide mechanism seems like it'll probably be a lot less prone to issues than the pivot found on other models (while spring loading still makes it satisfying to use) and the black / violet color combo isn't the least bit abrasive in person. Even though Danger and T-Mobile have sourced this model to Moto instead of the usual suspect Sharp, make no mistake that this thing's every bit as much a Sidekick inside -- the software's the same and the controls are all where you'd expect them to be. Our only real complaints here: the keypad's a little tricky to use thanks to a dearth of tactile feedback, and after playing with the LX, the Slide's display is a low-res disappointment that leaves a heap of black margin around the edges where additional screen real estate should be. C'mon, you knew this was coming. Not a moment after Google does its big reveal on the Android OS and forthcoming multi-manufacturer GPhone, the rumor mill has already starting churning with wild imaginings and fantastic leaps of logic. A not-so gigantic jump comes as speculation that HTC's Omni -- which we first heard about nearly a year ago -- is actually the phone that has been referred to as the "Dream," Google's OS demo unit. We have to admit, there are some similarities between the two, not the least of which are the 3-inch by 5-inch size, rectangular touchscreen, full QWERTY that swivels out (which according to this earlier rendering, goes in more than one direction), and a beveled edge that "nestles in the palm." We remind you, of course, that this is just the first in a long line of rumors trying to pinpoint the "real" GPhone -- HTC or otherwise -- so don't get too excited just yet.

Update: As a commenter points out, the "earlier rendering" is actually the precursor to the Omni, the HTC Universal, though its screen mechanism bears a resemblance to the one described in the original Forbes article.

In case you haven't already ordered this piece of hardware, we bring good news: Western Digital have just launched a 320GB 2.5 inch Scorpio SATA hard drive. This 5400 RPM baby costs only $200 and it will be compatible with the PS3 that supports any SATA hard drive out there. Finally some freedom from Sony who will probably be the last company to ignore homebrewers instead of working with them.

I guess that buying a cheaper PS3 and than this hard drive is a better option than going for a more expensive console. Also, putting Linux on such a hard drive is also a good idea and an option used by many PS3 owners, who have that 10GB storage space required by the OS. So, what could you fit in 320GB? Well, probably enough Metal Gear Solid 4 and Final Fantasy XIII saves to last for a lifetime. Since Sony's new format, the Blu-ray brought some extra storage space to the new age disk, hard drives are forced to evolve as we're heading towards a "downloadable future", which will see the DVD, Blu-Ray and HD-DVD only being used for music and films, while the games are made available through online services.

Till that time comes, we're "training" with hard drives and Western Digital's latest work is not impressive considering that a PS3 games can take up about 30GB of storage space in case Sony decides to make it available for download. Aside from forcing the hard drives to evolve, that "downloadable future" I mentioned will also increase the gamers' demand for better connections and servers made available by Sony and Internet providers.

In the meantime, I must say that I really fancy this hard drive, as Sony have promised to release tons of games in 2008 and I really should be getting their demos, trailers while saving storage space for saves. - Softpedia

So, the PlayStation 2 has been around 7 now, has it...? That's more than enough for any video games console, but not for the PlayStation 2. No sir, Sony is throwing it back into the fight with a revamped model and a cheaper one at that - just $99, bringing it to £75 or "maybe" even lower, according to mcvuk.com. However, Sony refused to comment on the news.

According to MCV, "new low-price 'compact' PS2 to arrive in 2008" has a "built-in power supply for the first time in the console’s history – allowing the platform holder to manufacture it more economically and sell it at the bargain price." Now wait just a minute here? The first time in the PS2's history, or the first time in the Slim PS2's history? The original PlayStation 2 actually comes with a built-in power adapter. Well, did come, anyway.

"MCV can exclusively reveal that this ‘compact’ PS2 will hit the US at just $99 in the New Year – a reduction of $30 from its current selling price of $129," says the piece. "PS2 this week celebrated its seventh anniversary, during which time it has sold over 120 million units worldwide. Yet this cut demonstrates Sony’s belief that the system’s market is far from exhausted."

But yes, the Slim PS2 did originally arrive on the market with some extra ballast, so to speak, and it remained so up until now. What I can't understand is how on Earth were they able to reduce the PS2's size so much. Just take a look at the image to the left (click to enlarge). #1 is the original PS2, #2 is the PS2 Slim with the adapter outside of the machine's black case and hanging around, while the third is how the new PS2 should look, except for the missing AV cable and power cord of course, which don't appear in the image.

Well, don't think for a minute it's not true or anything like that. The PS2 still has an adapter inside, a smaller one perhaps. However, it should bring the console's weight back up considerably, but hey, it's not a handheld …so as long as it stays at its current size, weight doesn't matter much. Not long after Western Digital announced the achievement of the "industry's highest demonstrated density to date using continuous media", the company is coming out with another first.

Western Digital yesterday announced the availability of the new WD Scorpio 320 GB 2.5-inch SATA (Serial ATA) hard drives for notebook computers and portable storage devices. The press release touts it as being the "world's highest capacity 2.5-inch, slim, 9.5mm form-factor hard drive".

The WD Scorpio also features a 5400 spin speed and 12 ms access time together with a maximum transfer rate of 3Gb/s. This capacity was achieved with the perpendicular recording technology, which reinforces magnetic coupling between neighboring bits, achieving higher and more stable recording densities and improved storage capacity.

As expected, the model also boasts the company's proprietary WhisperDrive, ShockGuard and IntelliSeek technologies. Here's what they do. The WhisperDrive combines state-of-the-art seeking algorithms to yield the WD Scorpio 320 GB as one of the quietest 5400 RPM, 2.5-inch drives available. The ShockGuard technology combines firmware and hardware advancements to protect the drive mechanics and platter surface to meet the highest combined shock tolerance specifications required for mobile and notebook applications. The IntelliSeek calculates the optimum seek speeds to lower power consumption, noise and vibration.

"Consumer demands for high capacity storage are stronger than ever. WD is again leading the industry by delivering high quality, high capacity product to the market with the introduction of its new WD Scorpio 320 GB hard drive," said Campbell Kan, vice president of mobile computing business unit, Acer Inc.

Intel yesterday rolled out the new Dual-Core Intel Itanium Processor 9100 series processors, the sixth generation of Itanium chips.

The new CPUs boast a new feature called Core Level Lock-Step that "improves the data integrity and reliability of applications by eliminating undetected errors in the core". This improvement adds to the existing Socket Level Lock-Step technology to deliver greater reliability, availability and serviceability (RAS) by guaranteeing that calculation results are consistent among the cores and sockets.

Another new feature is Demand Based Switching (DBS), which supposedly reduces server power consumption during low utilization periods.

The 9100 series features clock speed of up to 1.66 GHz and 667 MHz Front Side Bus (FSB) within a 104W power envelope. A three-load bus, two processors and a chipset on the same bus, provides increased bandwidth for enterprise and high-performance computing tasks.

"The Itanium ecosystem continues to grow as customers choose industry standard platforms supported by leading system OEMs that provide them with the broadest choice of applications", said Pat Gelsinger, senior vice president and general manager, Intel’s Digital Enterprise Group.

All server-maker members of the Itanium Solutions Alliance (ISA) will launch new Dual-Core Intel Itanium Processor 9100 series-based products, including Bull, Fujitsu, Fujitsu Siemens Computers, HP, Hitachi, Intel, NEC, SGI and Unisys.

The 9100 series, with its extensive virtualization partitioning features, is the premier platform for RISC and mainframe migration. Following the bumpy ride of Microsoft's latest client since its debut on the shelves at the end of January 2007, and on the background of a still consistent general preference for Windows XP, Windows Vista's faith seemed to linger in a precarious balance between being adopted or ignored. However, the company's strong financial results in the first quarter of the 2008 fiscal year ended on September 30, contradict such a scenario, placing Vista in the limelight. With Microsoft reporting the fastest growing first-quarter revenue since 1999, the company is starting to send out signals that Vista is not only here to stay but that the operating system has yet to deliver its true impact on the market.

In this sense, the president of the Platforms & Services Division of Microsoft, Kevin Johnson, revealed that the company is experiencing an increase in the demand for the platform as well as favorable numbers that point to an increase pace of the uptake in the corporate environment. Businesses, already notably slow at migrating to new technologies, be them hardware or software upgrades, have as far been quite shy of transitioning to Vista from older Windows operating systems.

But instead of throwing down the gauntlet, Microsoft is forecasting optimistic adoption rate for Vista, informing that businesses are starting to get cozy with the operating system, almost a year since it was launched for corporate customers, and that the holiday season looks promising. To this date, the Redmond company has shipped in excess of 88 million copies of Vista worldwide, roughly 10 million licenses per month since the product's release.

An unknown hacker has implanted a virus using real data into the World Bank website. Websense Security Labs discovered the new Trojan Horse virus and said that the hacker had captured names and e-mail addresses from the contact pages of the bank’s website.

“The web attacker spoofed a working individual at the World Bank and hacked an important bank report,” Venkatesh Swaminathan, regional sales manager, Websense Security Labs, said.

A further check of the entire hacking exercise by Websense revealed that the hacked report pertained to a three-year Country Partnership Strategy (CPS) report on Bulgaria’s achievements over the last eight years, the surveillance roles played by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the European Union’s (EU) Stability and Growth Pact upon Bulgaria’s EU accession.

Forget about Windows Live Messenger 8.1 and 8.5, Microsoft is cooking Windows Live Messenger 9.0. Currently, Windows Live Messenger 9.0 is in the very early stages of baking, but this does not mean that the Redmond company is not perfecting the receipt of its instant messaging client. Andrew Jenks, a Microsoft employee speaking at the Georgia Institute of Technology revealed that Windows Live Messenger 9.0 is planned for availability towards the end of 2008, but it could slip into 2009.

LiveSide, quoting Ampcoder, focused on Jenks' announcement of a new Microsoft application programming interface designed to be joined at the hip with the 9.0 version of Windows Live Messenger. The API will permit third-party developers to build upon Windows Live Messenger 9.0, creating customized versions of the instant messaging client or even programs that take advantage of the features available. The details are scarce, but developers apparently will be able to access a technical preview of the API concomitantly with the MIX08 conference next year.

In addition, Microsoft is also looking to include the first beta of the application programming interface with the finalized version of Windows Live Messenger 9.0. Over at Redmond, very early, internal builds of Windows Live Messenger 9.0 already include some of the components that will make up the final API.

Still, Microsoft plans a consistent evolution with Windows Live Messenger 9.0. If the currently available versions of the IM client, builds 8.1.0178 and 8.5.1288.816 Beta 2 are targeting integration and support for Windows Vista as a primary focus, Windows Live Messenger 9.0 will potentially bring to the table multi-person audio/video chat capabilities, although there is even a chance that the feature will be pushed back as far as v10.

However, one aspect that Microsoft is hard at work on is the interoperability of Windows Live Messenger 9.0 with alternative instant messaging clients such as AIM, Gtalk and ICQ, in a similar manner to the integration with Yahoo Messenger. And last, but not least, while Apple users will not be getting an upgrade to the MSN Messenger for Mac, they will be able to access a new client designed with Mac OS X in mind.

Yahoo is releasing version 9.0 of its popular instant messaging software, Yahoo Messenger, for Windows tonight. All in all, the update contains nothing revolutionary but does introduce some useful features.

Most remarkably, you can now add embed objects - such as movies,
images, and maps - into chat conversations. Also handy: you can
synchronize the playback of online videos and share Flickr photos in a
slideshow, although only with one friend at a time.

Yahoo has also redesigned the user interface of Messenger’s friends
list, bumped up file transfer limits to 2GB per-file, begun
automatically scanning transfered files with Norton AntiVirus, added
call forwarding to its VoIP offering, and designed new skins. Users can
now send SMS messages to their friends’ cell phones with the desktop
client. And Messenger has been localized for six new markets - the
Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, India (in Hindi), and
Vietnam - raising the sum of localized versions to 25.

While AOL has the most unique instant messaging users in the United
States - and MSN has the most worldwide - Yahoo claims that their user
base grew by 19% in the past year whereas AOL only grew by 2%.

I asked Yahoo representatives whether they were planning to
integrate Yahoo Messenger with their other properties, such as the new
social network Mash,
but they declined to give any specifics. Hopefully their vague
insistence that Yahoo is always looking for ways to integrate its
products will lead to something experimental and new, like a Yahoo
Messenger-Mash hybrid. A “real-time” social network with extensive
chat, messaging, and VoIP calling functionality would be very
interesting competition for Facebook and the like. It would also up the
ante on MySpace and its integration of Skype, and take on startup FlickIM.

About This Tutorial: From long time I wanted to write this but was always running out of time as the topic is complicated and too long! I always like to come-up with simple ways of doing geekish things as this Devils Workshop have great variance in its audience. So writing a post for all is always cumbersome but still lets see how it goes… (and yes we have editing function with us! )

Who Should Read This: This is for anyone who is new to firefox extension development. More accurately for the geeks who haven’t coded any extension for firefox yet! This is just to build foundation, to kick-start yourself!

About Example Covered: The example covered with this tutorial is a toolbar with just one feature: Google Search! And lets call it: GoogBar! (You can Download Source here)

Section 0: Prerequisites, Tools & References!

Prerequisites: Little knowledge of HTML/XHTML, XML, JavaScript, and CSS.

Tools: Any text-editor which supports HTML/Javascript/CSS syntax-highlighting will be great. I use vi/gedit (on Linux) and notepad (on Windows)

References: I started with tutorial at BornGeeK and still find it useful. In fact its greatness will reflect throughout this post. Still you may find these useful

Section 1: Basic File Structure Layout

Lets go other way round - Outside-In!

Firefox extensions filename ends with xpi extension. For time being assume xpi = zip. In fact xpi is just zip archive! So what this archive contains?

It will contain atleast: 2 files - install.rdf & chrome.manifest + 1 folder - usually named chrome!

Firefox extensions require a specific internal file structure. To ensure this few files/folders will always have fixed place while optional files/components have little freedom to move around. Lets move ahead with an example extension: GoogBar so as keep track of extension development! Lets start by creating a directory - GoogBar and other files/folder structure under it as shown below…

install.rdf & chrome.manifest are just plain-text file so create two empty text files and rename them to install.rdf & chrome.manifest.

Important Note: Be careful while renaming files on windows as extension part often remains unchanged. Make sure to rename something like new.txt to install.rdf and not install.rdf.txt!

Section 2: Creating Metadata - Dealing with Important files

Metadata means data about data! All the metadata is stored in install.rdf & chrome.manifest.

A. install.rdf file

This is XML file. It contains metadata identifying the addon, providing information about who created it, where more information can be found about it, which versions of what applications it is compatible with, how it should be updated, and so on. We have already created empty install.rdf file. Its time to fill it up!

Explanation of Highlighted Fields:

extensionname@yourdomain.com: This must be unique as this is id of your extension. So make sure you chose an extension/domain name pair which is not in use by others! Ex. GoogBar@devilsworkshop.org (Note: You do not need to purchase a domain to make this unique! Use any domain like yourfullname.com or microsoft.com (I don’t think they have sportsman spirit to develop anything for firefox)

Extension’s Name: This is name of your extension seen by humans! So use something nice & descriptive!

version: The only point I can tell you about version numbers here is they always goes on increasing with updates. So do not bother about this too much at this point.

targetApplication - minVersion & maxVersion: These are minimum and maximum versions of firefox you are targeting!

Optional Items: I guess all have descriptive name. Also there are more than shown in this example. So keep this tutorial short I am skipping details about this optional items!

Important Note: Do not change value {ec8030f7-c20a-464f-9b0e-13a3a9e97384} in above sample! It is GUID of Firefox!

So GoogBar’s install.rdf will look like…

B. chrome.manifest file

A chrome manifest is how we tell Firefox what packages and overlays our extension provides. In simple words it tells firefox what our extension does! Now its time to fill up chrome.manifest

Let us again take a look at a sample file. This sample is particularly taken for this tutorial as chrome.manifest may contains lots of other information too! Replace highlighted extensionname with your extension name!

Let me give you a little more explanation about above two lines…

Line 1 tells: content (Read Functions) by this extension are in content/ directory! All functions which we will be implementing soon as javascript files will be kept in content/ directory!

Line 2 tells: overlay (Read User Interface) information for this extension is in googbar.xul file in content subdirectory! We will be creating goobar.xul soon! In fact we can create XUL file with any other name!

Section 3: Creating Graphical User Interface - GUI

Most Firefox extensions have one goal in common: wanting to add or change some graphical element(s) in Firefox. Fortunately adding and modifying GUIs is quite easy. But this ease comes with a dedicated language developed for firefox GUI called XUL (pronounced “zool”). XUL stands for XML User-Interface Language, so if you know XML then I bet you can learn XUL in few minutes!

Enough chit-chat, now its time for creating googbar.xul under content subdirectory! So our tree will look like…

First write (copy) following non-optional XML declaration as it is…

Then comes script tag! Let me brief first scripts coming into picture. Note the sequence of event!

In this XUL file we will be adding a toolbar with one text field and a button.
We want some code to be executed when someone press the button.
So pressing button should call the code. Now we can write code in
- this XUL file itself: OK for small code but bad practice!
- in separate JS file

At this point we made decision to create a separate JS file but this XUL file should be aware of it so that it can associate buttons with JS file code. For this we will be using script tag! Just paste following code before </overlay> tag.

Now time come to create toolbar using following XUL code!

All toolbars in Firefox should live within a toolbox element which gets placed inside the overlay element we created moments ago:

We will place toolbar and its component inside the toolbox we just specified. Toolbar is basically row of buttons, text-field & labels. Here comes our toolbar with one label (to show toolbars name), one textbox (to specify search query) & one button (to fire search request):

Important Note: All id/name attribute must be unique as they will be going to global by default! Thats why everytime we need to name something we prefixed it with GoogBar!

Let’s now create our JavaScript file - googbar.js in the content directory! That will make our structure look like…

As we highlighted in previous section we will now implement GoogBarSearch(event) function which will make use of GoogBarQuery id. This function will perform following steps:

Access user query written in textbox using textbox id GoogBarQuery.
Use that value to shoot Google Search Query!

This can be accomplished with following codes. Also thats all googbar.js will have!

Section 5: Packaging Extension for distribution!

Yes we are done! So lets pack the things the way firefox like! Your aim is to create a archive which contains everything inside GoogBar excluding GoogBar itself! Then to make sure that archive has xpi extension!

Packaging on Linux:

From shell execute zip command with format:

zip <extensionname>.xpi chrome.manifest install.rdf content/* <optional files>

In our case command needs to be fired is:

zip googbar.xpi chrome.manifest install.rdf content/*

Packaging on Windows:

Use any zip utility to create a zip file which consists everything inside top-level extension directory! DO NOT include top-level directory itself! OR just select files and folder(s) using control+click and then right-click on selection, select Send To >> compressed (zipped) folder! You will get a zip file with name like googbar.zip or content.zip or something like that!
Just rename it to googbar.xpi (i.e. extensionname.xpi). Also ensure renaming operation as from Windows explorer you may end up renaming file to something like googbar.xpi.zip!

Thats it! Its time to test our work!

Section 6: Installing & Testing Your Extension!

Just drag-n-drop googbar.xpi on Firefox. OR Go to Firefox, execute File >> Open (or press ctrl+O) and navigate to location of googbar.xpi and open it up! This will open a pop-up, click Install Now to proceed and restart firefox to complete installation!

After restarting you will see GoogBar below Navigation Toolbar. Also check View >> Toolbars in firefox to confirm it further!

Type something in text-box and press search! DO NOT just type & hit enter as we havent configured text-box to process any keyboard event so you won’t get any result until you press search button! Well that we can easily do by modifying googbar.xul and goobar.js!

Ok folks… this is for those who can get it.. I shall not explain at length… I picked up on this idea from devil’s last “bomb” ;-)

when you embed images usually the images are resized.. and users have a tendency to click on images to view the “full version”... add a line saying “click to enlarge” underneath the image for dumb users…

instead of embedding an image using the regular image tags.. the following exploit can prove fatal….

How to Turn Your Browser Into a Weapon

Add these extensions to Firefox when you're looking to do some hacking

On Monday, I wrote about three of my favorite Firefox extensions that help me stay safe when I'm browsing the darker areas of the Web and incoming email. Today, let's look at three other extensions: Those that can turn Firefox into a feature-filled, Web-hacking weapon. These extensions aren't required to use Firefox for hacking Web applications, but they certainly make it a lot easier.

If I could only install one "offensive" extension, it would absolutely be Tamper Data. In the past, I used Paros Proxy and Burp Suite for intercepting requests and responses between my Web browser and the Web server. These tasks can now be done within Firefox via Tamper Data -- without configuring the proxy settings.

If the Website you're trying to break into requires a unique cookie, referrer, or user-agent, intercept the request with Tamper Data before it gets sent to the Web server. Then, add or modify the attributes you need and send it on. It's even possible to modify the response from the Web server before the Web browser interprets it. It's a very nice tool for anyone interested in Web application security.

Paros and Burp both have features not yet available in Tamper Data, such as site spidering and vulnerability scanning. Switching over to one of them as a proxy is much easier with SwitchProxy, which helps you quickly configure Firefox to use Paros and Proxy. It's not a purely "offensive" extension, but SwitchProxy it makes the configuration of proxies for Firefox much quicker.

The Web Developer extension is another must-have. This extension has too many features to list, and I typically find a new one each time I use it. Some of the features include editing practically every aspect of the page (HTML, CSS, cookies), viewing all elements in the page in a sort of WYSIWIG way, and converting form submission methods from POSTs to GETs and vice versa. I use it primarily for dissecting Web pages, but it comes in handy to convert the POSTs to GETs in order to easily manipulate the values in the URL address bar.

User Agent Switcher makes Firefox appear to be another browser, version, or base OS. This is something that can be done manually with Tamper Data, but with User Agent Switcher, it's a simple click of a menu option.

The ability to change the user agent -- to make Firefox running on Mac OS X appear to be Internet Explorer on Windows XP, for example -- can be handy when the Website limits what content is shown to Firefox users. The Storm worm was doing some user agent checking before sending exploit code to Internet Explorer clients. If I viewed the page with Firefox, I didn't see the code, but when I changed the user agent to Internet Explorer, I was able to receive the exploit code -- although it was ineffective against Firefox.

Firebug is an extension that's designed to help Web developers debug their Javascript applications, but it is great when trying to get a handle on an AJAX site. I've found it useful primarily when I'm doing analysis of a Website that's hosting malicious, obfuscated Javascript. There is a command line interface in Firebug that allows me to enter different functions and obfuscated chunks of code in order to find out exactly what is taking place.

As with Monday's list, this list is not meant to be comprehensive. All of these Firefox extensions are tools I use regularly when performing Web application assessments and malicious Javascript analysis. If you're interested in learning more about Web application security, try out these extensions and use them to explore sites you're familiar with. This should help you get a feel for how they work before attempting to hack a particular Website. Good luck.

How to Verify That You Have Typed In The Correct Password

When you type your password on a website, all you see are asterisk (*) signs. That is probably a security measure in web browser to prevent people, sitting next to you, from finding your password.

But there are cases when you would really want to know the exact characters that you are typing in the password filed.

For instance when logging into your online bank account, if you type the wrong password more than three times, the account access could be locked for the next few hours. And it’s not uncommon to make typing mistakes especially when you have a long password.

A simple solution to prevent password typo errors is the show my password bookmarklet - just drag the link into your browser bookmarks.

Now the next time when you login into some website, just type the password and click the “show my password” bookmarklet before hitting the Submit button - this will reveal the actual password characters, not the asterisk signs. (see screenshot)

File Recover allows you to recover critically important documents, or other files, which have been lost by accidental deletion. These files may be lost by emptying the Recycle Bin, or using other deletion actions that bypass the Recycle Bin altogether. Such actions include Windows® Shift-Delete, command line deletion, deleting excessively large files or using applications that delete files without the Recycle Bin.

When a file is deleted from the Recycle Bin, or if the recycle bin is bypassed altogether, the file can no longer be recovered by the Windows® Operating system. The content of the file still remains on the drive, relatively intact, until the section of the drive it occupies is overwritten by another file.

File Recover identifies the contents of such lost files on the hard drive and allows you to recover them. If a file has been partially overwritten, File Recover attempts to reconstruct as much of the file as possible with the remaining contents. This allows you to salvage at least part, if not all, of that recovered file to continue using it as required.

I re-found something today that I had forgotten about. It outlines a couple of quick methods you can use to speed up the Firefox engine and make pages load more quickly for you. I set this up again this evening and see a noticeable speed increase.

Here are five steps for speeding up your browser.

In your address bar visit: about:config
Find: network.dns.disableIPv6. Set “true”
Find: network.http.pipelining. Set “true”
Find: network.http.pipelining.maxrequests. Set “8″
Find: network.http.proxy.pipelining. Set “true”

This little trick has been around for a while. I wanted to get it out there for anyone that hadn’t known about it. Also make sure I write it down so I don’t forget it again the next time I re-install (which I do far too often).

Flock 1.0 - Is More of a Good Thing Enough?

Flock version 1.0 was just released Friday after a succesful debut at TechCrunch 40.
This feature loaded browser has met with moderate success this year,
and this version adds social networking functions to an already feature
rich browsing experience.

I covered Flock version 0.9 for ReadWriteWeb
back in September and it was greatly enhanced over their previous
version. Yesterday's full release is an even more refined example of a
great browsing tool, but is it enough to put Flock in the running?

Flock has had problems since their early development - primarily
because of being over hyped and due to its resemblance (and usage) of
FF2. Many considered it to be nothing more than a fancy clone of FF,
but even in my early testing Flock really took on a personality of its
own. The browser is fantastically capable, with great ideas and
refinements. Their problem still seems to stem from slow development
and delineation from FF and user's allegiance to FF and other browsers
- which are all capable in their own right. I expect this dilemma is
what nips at the heels of Flock all the time.

The New Stuff

Adding the new social media elements (accounts) to Flock is a cinch.
Facebook, Twitter, Flickr and YouTube accounts are the latest additions
and add immensely to Flock's appeal. Facebook fans will love the Flock
element because they can see their friends images and status in the
sidebar. I like the YouTube extension myself because I can either
view/play my favorites or those of other users as well. The Twitter
application also has a great feature set including direct messaging,
profiles and etc., and there is also support for Piczo, Ma.gnolia and Photobucket and Flock promises more soon.

Stuff and More Stuff

Flock says they have tweaked or refined many bug issues, but beyond
some slowness compared to the regular FF2, I never really noticed any
serious ones in the first place. A new Web clipboard allows users to
drag-and-drop virtually anything from the sidebar into Flock - this is
cool. The Facebook addition has also enhanced the media bar utility by
allowing for drag and drop uploads. All in all, Flock has added a
fairly cool and effective set of social networking additions that will
appeal to many.

Performance - The Final Frontier

Flock has had something of an uphill battle as so many have
mentioned. For 2 years CEO Shawn Hardin and his team have incrementally
added great features to the browser. In a very competitive niche -
battling technical issues and user loyalty - I think they have done
extremely well. At the end of the day though, I think they are going to
have to hurry up with more services and ultimately a big addition
(speed) or collaboration of some kind.

I asked Shawn early on if I could get my Stumble Upon
account integrated and his technical support guys said I should ask SU
about it. I was not sure how to take that - it was sort of like
ordering a chicken sandwich and having the waitress tell me to go kill
a chicken. I recommended Flock to everyone back in September and I
still do - it is fun to use, feature rich and just plain cool - but is
it enough? The only thing that would attract diehard FF2 fans to Flock
would be more speed (Flock is not slow now) in conjunction with all
these great features. Shawn told me that they were focused on basing
the browser on some technology besides FF - so I think many will need
to see that before they migrate.
